Yokohama, a city that sits in Tokyo Bay, is often overlooked when traveling in Japan. I admit, it is not as exciting and culturally rich as other travel destinations, but it still has unique attractions to offer. If you are in the Tokyo area looking for a day-trip and are sick of shrines and temples, Yokohama is for you.
Yokohama is the capital city of Kanagawa prefecture. It is slightly to the south of Tokyo and on the mainland of Honshu Island. It is a major commercial hub of the Greater Tokyo area. Initially starting out as a fishing village that opened Japan’s doors to foreign trade through its port, it developed into a prominent port city very rapidly, and also holds a large population of foreign nationals. Yokohoma’s climate is a humid subtropical climate with hot and humid summers and not too cold winters.
There are many places of interest in Yokohama that fascinates travelers. At 106 meters, Yokohama Marine Tower is the tallest inland lighthouse in the whole world. It is located in the Yamashita Park next to the waterfront in the celebrated port area of Kannai. Japan’s largest Chinatown is situated in this city as well, and is worth a visit. You will find the food tasting very different from the Chinatown in New York or any other place. Shitennoji Temple is one interesting place that you should visit because it is known to be the first ever sponsored Buddhist house of worship in the country. You will not be paying for any fee unless you want to enter the Treasure Hall in which you will be charged 200 yen. You can visit Osaka Castle Park from 9 am to 5 pm. There are about six floors and in every floor you can find different features. For instance, the first floor is where you will see the information, museum store and theater room and more of the replica of the Castle on the second floor. Hidegoshi Toyotomi and the Golden Tea Room are located on the third and fourth floors. On the fifth floor, you will be amazed by the scenes of: “ Summer war of Osaka”. A diorama of the life of Hidegoshi Toyotomi can be seen on the sixth floor.
If you want something more of an outdoor activity, then I recommend Tennoji Park. There you can see different animals and beautiful gardens. Moreover, if you want to visit a Hollywood type of place, then try Universal Studios Japan. They have added a touch of 4th dimension to the movie experience and are famous among the locals as well. And what is unique about the bars and pubs in Japan is that most of the people do not socialize with other groups unlike in other countries where they go out and meet other people. But if you are more of a social person and wish to talk and know others, then a place called Gaijin Bar is what you need. Also, in order not to leave without regrets, try places such as the Hep five, Nanba Grand Kagetsu, Spa World, Osaka Aquarium and Dotombori. You will discover more and eventually say that your travel to Osaka is worth it.

One of the largest aquariums in the world, you’d best set aside a couple of hours for this attraction. It’s not like other aquariums – visitors are able to walk through and under the central exhibits, giving you several perspectives of your favorite underwater creatures. With crustaceans, jellyfish and giant rays and even giant swimming rats, you’ll be sure to see some unique exhibits.

Best Osaka Shopping
Osaka is littered with shopping malls and arcades. My personal favorite is doguyasuji, where you can find shops filled with authentic Japanese kitchen items, including cooking utensils. The Japanese pride themselves on quality food – and their equipment is no exception.
They often prepare with copper pots, which are adept at distributing heat well. At the very least, you should pick yourself up a traditional square omelet pan (I have one!) – a requirement if you would like to make yourself a traditional Japanese omelet at home.
Food & entertainment in Osaka
Food culture in Osaka is unrivaled. At every corner and between is a ramen (thin Japanese noodle) or okonomiyaki shop. It’s important to note that there are several kinds of okonomiyaki, ie. Japanese savory pancakes. Osaka is famous for the flour-based battered version with cabbage and seafood, beef or pork – my personal favorite. Alternatively, the Hiroshima style is also renowned as a delicious noodle pancake mix. For those seeking a curious alternative, check out takoyaki octopus balls.
